Hi Alex, I had already been to Russia in 2010. This time I traveled from Moscow to St. Petersburg along secondary roads and following the route suggested in this discussion. The trip was really interesting. I wanted to visit the two capitals of the Russian Empire: paying particular attention to the historical sites of the 1917 Revolution and, at the same time, to look for places where Dostoevsky lived (in Moscow, Staraia Russa, St Petersburg). This time I also wanted to visit Russia during the autumn to enjoy the wonderful colors of the forests. For this reason I have ride into Pavlovsk park which is particularly impressive. Unfortunately, the autumn had not yet completely colored the trees (I arrived maybe one week or so in advance) but still the landscapes were awesome.
I must explain a thing that maybe you have missed. I am preparing this travel for the next year since now it is too late to plan it. I would like to start from Москва in mid-October and arrive to Санкт-Петербург within the first week of November. Frazer7 and Alex The duration of the day will be definitely a problem. Few years ago I traveled in Alaska http://viaggibici.altervista.org/Mondo/callofwild/callofwild.html but it was summer and the problem was exactly the opposite ahaha... next year in Russia, as you suggest I will need many lights to see and be seen...
  9. Hello VladG, thank you for your post in italian!! In fact I was a bit worried about the ice and you have tranquillize me a bit. In any case I will have to prepare for the trip very carefully because I'm not used to cycling at russian temperatures ..eheh ... But do you really use such tires during russian winter?! --------- Marr, you're right! in fact I had not thought. I will try to be careful and avoid busy roads too. Thank you all!
  10. Hello all I am checking the weather forecast from the site you have suggested. Today in Санкт-Петербург is snowing. It seems that temperature will stay below zero for few days. So I have a doubt: Do the roads remain icy? Is it dangerous to ride along icy road in this season? I think that it is very hard to control bike on ice or frozen snow (in Rome the roads never freeze over). If the road remain iced for days -and I must stop- it could be a big problem for me. Thank you very much for your help (and patience...)
  11. Hello In fact I have followed almost exactly your itinerary along the old Smolensk road. It was very beautiful. Unfortunately I had some intestinal problems after Smolensk and I had to stop one day at Верхнеднепровский to regain strength. After that I preferred to travel on M1 (avoiding longer secondary roads) and arrived at Вязьма: Верхнеднепровский-Вязьма About the road Москва Санкт-Петербург, I have analised the track. It is very interesting and beautiful Unfortunately there are some things that I must check with attention. 1) the entire road is not complete. Some stages are not linked. For example there is a hole between stage1 and stage2 2) The road is not totally paved. Some stages requires crossing little streams and dirt roads. I don't know if I can pass there during autumn and with a full bike. Anyway I am going to find possible alternative routes for such hard stretches of road. (see the third picture! ahah stage 13 3) Finally it doesn't arrive at Пушкинские Горы. But I really don't know how get there without making a very long way around. Maybe I must renounce to this part of my planned trip and follow the more "direct" road like BP-1. I am going to study the itinerary with more attention and decide where to pass. Thank you for your invitation! I am honored to meet you. Unfortunately I am afraid I must postpone the project until next year. now it is too late to organize the route, buy a VISA, and book a (cheap) flight...
  12. It 's almost exactly the tour I wanted to plan! Thank you! I must add the part of the itinerary you made. Tomorrow I'm going to start a little tour around my house. (if you are curious: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/16086658) As soon as I get back I will study the route that you suggested. (You're right! I forgot to say that I prefer to travel on paved roads!)
  13. Thank you Santa, When I planned my first travel in Russia I was worried about border crossing. Strangers cannot enter Russia where they want, so I preferred to use a highway between Орша and Смоленск. This time I will stay in Russia all the time so I will not have problem with border crossing and I will prefer to travel secondary roads. But this time the problem is due to the road condition....bike travelling is not so easy... eheheh. The Велорадар is a great site!!! very thanks! I will analyse some tracks there, to take inspiration. Also your facebook page is very useful, although I haven't a facebook account and cannot reply there. I would like to start from Moscow. (For your curiosity: the gps is taken from this site: http://www.rctc.ru/) In particular, I would like to pass near Химки where is the monument commemorating the resistance to the nazi-fascism advance. And I would like to visit Пушкин and Достоевский houses-museum near Псков and Старая Русса. vvsar Thank you very much! I hope that my muddy clothes will not be a problem eheh. PS I am very sorry to break the forum rules. In case you can reply to my email address: gallomax@tiscali.it
  14. Thank you all. Hello vvsar, yes I speak English (and better than Russian....) generally I don't like speaking English when I go abroad, but you are right: it is better to exchange information by using it, since I speak Russian only at an elementary level. I am planning a bike travel in Russia between Москва and Санкт-Петербург. I have already travelled in Russia -as you can see in my last update- but this time I would like to travel in October-November (15 October - 15 November, more or less). I am not worried about the rain, but about the road condition. I have read that during spring the roads are muddy. But I don't know how they are during late autumn. I don't know if snow may (and how many days?) block the roads . On the other hand I don't know the road condition between Москва and Санкт-Петербург but -anyway- I would avoid the M-10 highway. Mainly I would like to visit Пушкинские Горы and Ста́рая Ру́сса but I must plan stages and route. I have downloaded this gps (found somewhere): https://ridewithgps.com/routes/14962357 which -naturally- I will have to modify a little bit. PS You can answer using russian if you have problem with keyboard (as I have with russian....) but please use simple phrases.
